DATE: 02-20-2010
CONTACT OFFICER: Lt. Wayne Wisner
Raytown Police and Fire Departments responded to a report of an explosion and house fire in the 6400 block of Blue Ridge cutoff at about 11:45 this morning. When officers arrived they were met by a man and a woman. Officers received information that there was still a man in the house at which time officers entered the residence to locate the man. As soon as the officers entered, they were confronted by an older man armed with a handgun yelling at them to “get out” of his house.
Officers exited the house and called an “operation 100” for the armed man. Fire and Police personnel were able to move back from the scene along with the man and woman they had initially contacted. While containing the scene, officers heard several shots inside the residence. Within 40 minutes, tactical officers had begun to arrive at the residence. The man that was in the residence came out the front door armed with a handgun and a large knife. Officers instructed the man to drop the weapons. After the man had dropped the weapons, he was taken into custody by the police. The suspect appeared to have some minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital for evaluation.
Officers secured the house as a crime scene and were obtaining a search warrant to continue the investigation and to help in determining what may have caused the explosion. Residents of the home did confirm that medical oxygen tanks were in use at the home during the time of the explosion.
Officers will be continuing the investigation through the evening.
