American Exceptionalism is a phrase the political pundits have rediscovered recently. It is a concept that may worry some if it promotes arrogance, but it is also a phrase that causes reflection on the values that do make America exceptional. Foremost in my mind is that we are a nation founded on principles, rather than a nation founded on an ethnic region, or an hereditary family. Those principles are based on intellectual products of the Age of Reason, such as ”THE SOCIAL CONTRACT, OR PRINCIPLES OF POLITICAL RIGHT” by Jean Jacques Rousseau and by revolutionary documents like “THE RIGHTS OF MAN” by Thomas Paine.
I may like or even love a flag, anthem, or bird, but my reverence is reserved for that which truly sets us apart and reflects the values that make us a great nation, “THE CONSTITUTION“.
