Raytown South Theatre department to perform Dreamgirls

The Raytown South High School Theatre department will have Dreamgirls, a musical, on stage November 3, 4 and 5 at 7:00. The musical is set during a time when rhythm and blues were blending with other style of popular music, creating a new American sound. It takes a close look at the behind the scenes reality of the entertainment industry and the business end of music in that era, and follows the development of music all the way into the disco era.

The roles of Deena will be played by Mamie McIntyre, the role of Lorrell, by Anita Wells, and the role of Effie by Precious White. The role of Marty will be played by Andre Hardin, the role of Jimmy Early by Chester McIntyre, the role of Curtis by Titus Lauderdale, and the role of C.C. by Je’an Whitley.

Director Kristy Hensley is excited about the opportunity to bring the musical, which takes watchers from listening to and screaming for Elvis and the Beatles, to dancing to the boy and girl bands of the era, to the stage at South.

“We have talented vocalists and actors who will do well in this production,” Hensley said.

Those in attendance can expect to hear musical numbers reminiscent of The Supremes, The Marvelettes, The Temptations, and The Shirelles, and can expect to see some great dancing additionally.

Tickets will be $7 or $4 for students with a school ID.
