Raytown Middle School’s Blair’s Socks Fundraiser

Blairs SocksSocial Studies Teacher Andrew Kellermeyer’s sixth grade advisory class at Raytown Middle School collected over 110 pairs of new, packaged socks for Blair’s Foster Socks, an organization that provides socks to foster and homeless children around the Kansas City metropolitan area.

When given the task of choosing a class project, students expressed their desire to choose a project that had the potential of having a great impact on students and families in the community.  Many of Mr. Kellermeyer’s Advisory students were elementary classmates, in Girl Scouts, or were neighbors of Blair Shanahan and knew of her interest in providing socks to foster and homeless children.

“With Blair’s untimely death, her mother Michelle Shanahan-DeMoss decided to continue Blair’s mission of offering socks to foster & homeless children,” Kellermeyer explained.  “My Advisory class of 20 sixth-grade students was excited to partner with Ms. Shanahan-DeMoss in hosting a Sock Drive at Raytown Middle.”

On Wednesday, January 16th, Mr. Kellermeyer’s advisory class invited Ms. Shanahan-DeMoss to meet the students who donated socks in her daughter’s honor. Ms. Shanahan-DeMoss shared an inspirational message encouraging students to get involved in meaningful organizations that impact the lives of others in positive ways.
