Raytown School District’s District Teacher of the Year for 2013-2014 is Leslie Cole

leslie coleThe Raytown School District’s  District Teacher of the Year for 2013-2014 is Leslie Cole, Raytown Middle School 8th grade English teacher.  Ms. Cole has taught for ten years, 6 in Raytown.

Mrs. Cole impressed the judges as someone who is very relational.  In discussion with her, they heard Ms. Cole’s belief that education goes beyond the textbook, and that it her constant endeavor to impress that upon students.

“I was inspired to teach by my grandmother, Essie Mae Henderson, who taught school in Florida in a little old school house,” Cole said.

Raytown Middle School Principal Dr. Georgetta May says Ms. Cole is a positive presence on the   School staff and is very involved in building committees, seeking always to improve the school community.

“Ms. Cole’s lessons model quality and rigor, aligned with the district vision and mission,” Dr. May said in a written statement of nomination.

A colleague says the winner has distinguished herself as an integral part of her building staff and well understands the developmental needs of middle school learners, catering to those needs through the use of dynamic lessons that engage those middle-schoolers.

Ms. Cole is the 25th recipient of the honor, which originated in 1989.  At the breakfast announcing the selection, 12 former District Teacher of the Years were also recognized, along with the program’s original coordinator, Shirley Wurth.
