Help a Raytown School win a $50,000 grant

Fleetridge Elementary in the Raytown School District is one of ten elementary school finalists in the Battle of the Brains competition sponsored by Burns & McDonnell, where student teams submitted ideas for an actual future Science City exhibit.  If Fleetridge is announced as the winner, the school will earn a $50,000 grant to support STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education at the school, and students will see their design constructed in Science City at Union Station during 2012.

Two runners up will earn $5,000 each, and 14 honorable mention schools will earn $1,000 each. The winner is 70% determined by the judge’s rankings, and 30% by an online public vote.  Those wishing to support Fleetridge may do so by linking to www.battleofthebrainskc.com and voting once a day from their computer beginning November 11 through November 18 at 5:00 p.m.

“The idea that we are a top ten finalist from all 560 entries submitted from 456 teams is so exciting.  We need help with voting!” Fleetridge sponsor and 4th grade teacher Lindsay Sills said.

Fleetridge students’ idea is entitled, “The Tornado Experience,” which aims to reveal more of the science behind tornados.  The exhibit would demonstrate the rarity of all tornado variables coming together, with a goal of helping alleviate the fears associated with this phenomenon.  The idea is particularly timely, in light of recent occurrences in Joplin, Missouri and surrounding areas.

Winners of the Battle of the Brains KC will be announced on November 21 at 9:30 at an invitation only celebration at Science City at Union Station.
