Southwood student Shane Yocum wins writing contest

Southwood Elementary student Shane Yocum is the winner a recent writing contest held at the new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.  The contest was part of the center’s Young People’s Concert whose theme was Adventures in Storytelling.  Yocum was selected as the winner for his original story, Slept In.

In preparation for the contest, students studied story elements including character, character traits, setting, and plot. Students then spent time listening to the song “Hoedown” from Rodeo composed by Aaron Copland. Finally, they were given the writing challenge: “Using the story elements discussed in class, write a short story that is inspired by the music.”

Anson Baker, Principal of Southwood Elementary, explained that, “the trip offered the students an opportunity to experience a concert hall and a live performance of symphonic music.”  He finished by saying, “Congratulations Shane and well done Southwood writers!”

Because of this honor, Southwood fifth graders had a field trip day to attend the concert and all the students were invited to sit in the front rows during the performance.  After his story was read and the music was played, Shane was invited to go up on stage, shake the conductor’s hand, and take a bow.
