Students at the Raytown Success Academy recently opened “Success Surplus”, a reward store for students.

The store has in stock such items as pencils and paper and other school supplies, furry stuffed animals, beverages, and morning breakfast items. Students who earn “Surplus Bucks” for good academics, behavior, and citizenship can shop at “Success Surplus” at pre-determined times throughout the day.

At the ribbon cutting ceremony, student organizers thanked those who had helped clean and organize the space, teachers who believed in the idea, and the initial stock holder, Dr. Mark Bickelhaupt, principal of Raytown Success Academy, who provided some of the items for the opening.

Teacher Wanda Willis believes that ownership in the store will help students capture a sense of belonging and help them with interpersonal skills as well.

“I am really proud of them and the way they (students) have approached this whole idea of a store. Our staff here bought into the idea of having kids ‘own and operate’ this store, and it has given the students a purpose and a connection,” Willis said.

The plans for profits are to buy new items and turn over the stock, just like a real retail outlet.

“We will use math skills to keep the books and creative skills to advertise our business,” Student Ciera Edmonds said. “We have been working really hard for this grand opening and we are excited about what students can buy. Business is not easy!”
