The Green Space is sold

The former site of the First Baptist Church has been sold for $650,000.   The city bought the Church for $500,000 in 2000.

Congressman Cleaver helped obtain Federal money to demolish the building and safely deal with the expensive asbestos disposal costs in January of 2008.

The building was demolised in January of 2009.

Since the demolition, the site has become known as the Green Space.

The $150,000.00 does not really reflect a profit, since Raytown has been paying interest on a $500,000 loan for 12 years. The city could eventually see a significant increase of revenues from both property and sales taxes. At this point in time the buyer has paid $5,000 and has 270 days to finalize the deal. There are provisions for an extension, but the buyer would have to come up with  more earnest money to obtain an extension. No tax breaks of any type are involved in this deal.
